Communication and Language

Look at non-fiction books that are related to the Antarctic/Antarctica. Encouraging children to explore and use new vocabulary.

Personal Social and Emotional

Ask the children if they’d like to build an igloo using sugar cubes. Support children to use their resilience and persevere if the igloo collapses. Remind the children that it is a tricky task and encourage them to keep trying as they may succeed.

Physical Development

Create some white/sparkly playdough (keep in the fridge) for the children to mould, shape and develop their fine motor skills. Can the children roll snowballs or create a pointed iceberg?

Expressive Art and Design

Encourage the children to create their own Antarctic themed painting. Display photos of Arctic animals to look at for inspiration.

Literacy

Using shaving foam ‘snow’ encourage and support children to form letters from their name

Mathematics

Using cotton wool balls ‘snowballs’ place the equivalent match the amounts to the number cards.

Understanding the World

Talk about Antarctica’s climate and terrain. Look at and explore ice melting back to  water. Investigate things that help the ice to melt quicker such as heat and salt.
