Birthdays and celebrations. At group time discuss together what kind of food you might have at birthday parties. Discuss what a birthday cake is made of.

Communication Language and Literacy

Share the book “Pass the Jam Jim”. Look at the illustrations of party food. Children to join in with the rhyming phrases, design our own party invitations and write our own names.

Mathematics

Estimating and weighing. Make some biscuits with shape cutters. Weigh ingredients, discuss heavy and light. Name common shapes.

Understanding the World

Discover the properties of sugar. Dissolve some in water. Taste sweet and sour foods. Find out where sugar comes from.

Expressive Art and Design

Decorate shape biscuits. Make some model ice creams/lollies to sell in a role play ice cream kiosk. Make colourful bunting for a party.

Physical Development

Discuss healthy foods, and not so healthy foods that are a treat. Using fine motor control, use tweezers to pick up hundreds and thousands. Read “Topsy and Tim go to the dentist”. Find out about keeping our teeth healthy.
