Police

Personal Social and Emotional

Keeping safe…. Who keeps us safe?  Police, parents, doctors…. Who else?  What do we do if we loose our parent when we are out and about?  What can the police do to help us?  How can we recognise a Policer person?  What do they wear, what sort of car do they use?

Communication and Language

Talk about what police do.  Role play a police station, use dressing up, phones, walkie talkies.  Introduce new language around police.

Physical Development

Turn our bikes into “police vehicles”  see if we can manoeuvre them safely around our track.  Can we stop and start safely?  When we have the sirens on can we make them go fast!  Use cones to make the roadway safe.

Literacy

Read people who help us themed books to the children. Encourage them to join in with repeated refrainsCan we make up a story about a police persons day??  Can we illustrate our story by drawing police cars etc.

Mathematics

Talk to the children about numbers. Do they know the number to ring in an emergency? Practise phoning 999 on a toy phone and saying their house number so that if they get lost they can tell the police where to take them.  Place five emergency vehicles on a car mat. Ask the children to tell you how many they can see. Place them in different group size. Talk about the groups you can see.

Understanding the World

Explore the different uniforms for different job roles, which is the Police uniform?     Using an ink pad and paper, look at fingerprints using a magnifying glass.  Talk about where the police station is or how to call the police for help.  Which sorts of police vehicles are there??? Cars, vans, helicopter….

Expressive Art and Design

Emergency service vehicles travel quickly when they have their sirens on. Ask the children to travel slowly around a space and when they hear the siren (possibly a tambourine), they need to travel quickly and safely. Use coloured strips to assemble and design a police car with blue lights, text and colours.  Make lanyards and work badges for the children to use during role play. Encourage them to take turns.
