Colours
Personal Social and Emotional
Circle time game – pass a ‘talking object’ around the circle. When a child is holding the object, it is their turn to speak. Can the children tell the others what their favourite colour is? Hide a variety of different coloured objects around the outdoor area. Encourage the children to work as a team to find them.
Communication and Language
Play a listening and attention game with the children. Place several different coloured items on a tray and cover with a blanket. Ask the children to guess how many there are, then check by counting. Remove one of the objects, can they say which one has been removed? Help children to name and recognise common colours.
Literacy
Read the ‘Rainbow fish’ and ‘Elmer Elephant’, and discus what the stories are about. Play colour alliteration games in small groups. How many alliterative phrases can the group generate? For example, red rose, red rocket, red rabbit. Sing the Rainbow song
Physical Development
Provide different coloured pom-poms or buttons. Have some tweezers and pots available for the children to move the objects from one pot to another. Build with coloured blocks, can the children follow a colour pattern when building.
Mathematics
Collect a selection of different coloured objects. These could then be used for a variety of counting and sorting into colour group activities. Play colour dominos. Match up the colours and numbers.
Understanding the World
Look at traffic lights. Discuss what each colour means. Go for nature walks and explore what different colours the children can see.
Expressive Art and Design
Provide different colours of paint in a large tuff tray, along with different sized paintbrushes, pattern makers, sponges etc. The children can use the tools to explore colour mixing. They could also use paper to record their creation by gently pressing the paper onto the paint they have mixed. Play the ‘Colour Carnival’ song on Alexa, encourage the children to dance and express themselves using materials.
